For years, we’ve all been told the same thing: drink more water if you want to stay hydrated. But a study from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland reveals something surprising—you might be better off drinking something else.
What the Study Found
According to CNN’s Lisa Drayer, researchers compared how the body responds to different drinks when it comes to hydration. While water is still a great choice, it turns out that it’s not always the most effective.
Drinks that contain a little sugar, fat, or protein actually keep you hydrated longer. That’s because these extra ingredients slow down how fast fluid leaves your stomach. The longer the fluid stays in your system, the better your body can absorb and use it.
Milk: A Surprising Hydration Hero
One of the top performers in the study was milk. Yes, milk! It contains lactose (a sugar), protein, and fat—all of which help your body retain fluids. On top of that, milk also has sodium and potassium, two important electrolytes that help the body stay balanced and hydrated.
